Abstract

This introductory chapter outlines the development, aims, methods, theory and structure of the Australian Feminist Legislation Project (AFLP). Inspired by and drawing on the ‘feminist judgments’ projects worldwide, the AFLP brings together academics, lawyers and activists across Australia to amend existing legislation or draft new legislation with the explicit aim of promoting the needs and rights of women, non-binary, gender-diverse, intersex and transgender populations. At the nexus of academic work and activism, the authors position the project within feminist legal theory as an effort of ‘sceptical pragmatism’.
