Introducing assessment-task choice in an online bachelor course

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the initiation, implementation, and outcomes of a choice-based assessment regime in an online course in a bachelor business program at Swinburne Business School. Online modality is typically associated with higher attrition rates. Swinburne Online enables the Swinburne Business School to reach a broad cohort of learners, many of whom would otherwise not have an opportunity for quality tertiary education. Introducing assessment flexibility is premised on the choice being motivating for learners. Flexible assessment can take a number of forms, including choices related to assessment type, weighting, format, timing, and assessment criteria. Clear communication of the assessment regime, to both learners and faculty, was critical to its understanding and success. The learner communication strategy, enacted via the learning management system, comprised an initial email to all learners after their enrollment into the course advising of the assessment-task choice, an introduction video discussing the features and logistics of the assessment, and frequently asked questions.
