International students in a mobile world

Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of international student flows from source countries to education provider countries, noting the ten most popular destinations. The chapter highlights the economic and cultural imperatives of the international student sector and explains what it means to be an international student. It also highlights major studies that provide insights to some of the key issues associated with international students as temporary migrants. These include: housing; safety and security; finances, employment, and permanent residency; language and cultural adaptation; mental health and well-being; and the impact of Covid-19.
