Interfacial electrochemistry of oxides: Recognition of common principles

Abstract

Experimental date on the surface charge and enthalpy of double-layer formation are compared between a number of oxides and under a variety of conditions. It is expedient to introduce the concepts “specific” and “generic”, in order to distinguish between properties referring to a specific oxide, electrolyte, or experimental condition and features of general applicability. In this way it becomes possible to recognize common backgrounds which, in turn, contribute to the understanding and can be advantageously used in a variety of applications, such as colloid stability and double-layer modelling.
