Abstract
The pathways for super-refined intragranular precipitation of α phase in Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti5553) were studied using aberration-corrected electron microscopy and 3D atom probe tomography. Experimental results indicate clearly that the ω phase can influence this superrefined a precipitation. Phase field modeling based on structural and compositional information obtained from experiment shows that the presence of ω phase can modify the stress and compositional field in β matrix and therefore provide an extra driving force for α nucleation, as well as a nucleation site for α precipitation. An understanding of non-transformation pathway controlling super-refined α microstructure in Ti5553 has been developed and is described.
