Abstract
Individual tubular structures are weak in compression from buckling point of view. However, this limitation could be resolved if they are utilized in conjunction with other kind of structural elements. In the current study, the improvement induced by using Ultra High Strength (UHS) tubes in innovative corrugated columns is investigated. UHS tubes used at the corners have nominal yield stress of 1300MPa. Three different corrugated plate configurations are introduced and fabricated so that the effect of corrugation parameters such as angle of corrugation and height of corrugated plate are experimentally investigated. The results prove the superior performance of proposed innovative columns under compression compared to the accumulated capacity of similar column without tubes and four individual tubes. Also, it is shown that using the tubes at the corner not only enhances the capacity of innovative corrugated columns compared to that of the column without tubes, but also it will enhance the performance of individual UHS tubes under compression.
