Abstract

The prevalence of mental health conditions in long term care (LTC) facilities is substantially higher than in the community. There are very few guidelines for how best to support the mental health of older adults living in LTC facilities. Most research has focused on older adults living in the community and has typically excluded those with cognitive impairment and physical ailments—two conditions that are typical in LTC populations. This article provides clinicians with an overview of practical and innovative approaches for supporting the mental health of LTC residents. It provides insights for adapting and delivering psychological treatments to overcome multiple barriers to care within such settings.
