Abstract

The development and use of microtransactions for mobile video games raises considerable ethical ramifications. We present a three-stage investigation to derive an ethical framework that aims to address this space, which includes interviews with 11 developers. We found that the ethical framework provided a greater understanding of ethical considerations and could be effectively utilised when developing mobile games to improve future microtransaction development if sufficiently supported within the industry. The use of this framework within game development teaching and training programs could also improve adoption rates of ethical considerations within the industry and lead to a paradigm shift for game development procedures.
