Implications of using a cultural historical framework to investigate IWBs

    “What if” a sociocultural and sociohistorical approach is used in examining
    Information and Communication Technology in Education (ICTE). This paper reports on the implications of using Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as a framework to investigate the use of Interactive Whiteboards that was presented in ACEC2010 as progress of a research project. It is argued that ICTE can be more appropriately examined within the context in which they are being used. This includes cultural and historical factors; the classroom setting, context, prior knowledge and background of people and tools involved in the process. To support the argument this paper builds on the six-step framework based on CHAT. In this framework minimum unit of analysis is the activity system and the interaction among the tools, participants and the learning. I also argue that this Six-Step framework is a more holistic approach to researching ICTE. The implications of using this framework are also discussed.
