Abstract
This article centres on the limited attention received by Leonardo
Sciascia in the broader context of literary studies in Australia, addressing
however the substantial contribution to critical work on the writer provided
by Tom O’Neill, Professor of Italian Studies at the University of Melbourne
from 1985, until his premature death in 2001.The analysis seeks to take
stock of the distance between critical work which focuses on a political and
ideological approach, and critical work which centres on the literariness and
intertextuality of the works – the latter approach characterizing research by
Tom O’Neill and a particular strand of Anglophone criticism.
