How melting points of AKD, the corresponding ketone and their mixtures affect spreading behaviour

Abstract

The weak sizing ability of ketones was studied by taking a different approach. Special attention was given to the spreading behavior of alkylketene dimmers (AKD) and their corresponding ketones. Focus was on the melting points of AKD, their corresponding ketones and mixtures of AKD and ketones. The results show that the melting point of the AKD wax studied (52°C) is markedly lower than that of the ketone wax (∼80°C) which was produced by hydrolysing the AKD.
