Highly ordered coaxial bimodal nanotube arrays prepared by self-organizing anodization on Ti alloy

Abstract

The fabrication of highly ordered coaxial nanotube arrays by simple anodization of Ti-25Nb-3Mo-3Zr-2.2Sn alloy and the formation of such novel coaxial nanotubes is examined. The coaxial nanotubes are arranged in a highly ordered array with a large area. After the barrier layer is chemically etched by exposure to HF vapor for ten minutes, an interesting nanotubular structure with double coaxial walls was exposed. All experiments were carried out on Ti and Ti alloy sheets, which were prepared from forged bars from the Northwest Institute for Non-ferrous Metal Research. The sheets were ground with a series of SiC papers up to 1200 grit and polished with diamond paste. All samples were then sonicated in acetone, isopropanol, and methanol, successively, rinsed with deionized water, and dried in a nitrogen stream.
