Abstract
A series of Pt/WO3/SBA-15 catalysts with Pt content ranging from 0.5-3 wt% was prepared via sequential impregnation method. The prepared catalysts were systematically characterized using XRD, NH3-TPD, Py-IR, CO chemisorption, TEM and surface area measurements. The catalytic properties of Pt/WO3/SBA-15 catalysts were evaluated for vapor phase hydrogenolysis of glycerol under atmospheric pressure in a fixed bed reactor. The catalysts exhibited an unprecedented activity for the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1, 3-propanediol. The effect of reaction temperature, hydrogen flow rate, glycerol concentration and tungstate loading were evaluated to find the optimum reaction conditions. The glycerol conversion and the selectivity of 1, 3-PDO greatly depended on these factors. Among various catalysts investigated, the 2Pt/10WO3/SBA-15 catalyst exhibited superior activity and maximum 1, 3-propanediol selectivity at 230 oC. The Brønsted acid sites of the catalyst formed due to the addition of WO3 play an important role in selective formation of 1, 3-propanediol.
