Abstract

The age specific prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HBs was studied amongst an 87.8% sample of the adult population of Funafuti, an isolated Pacific island. Overall 74.3% of subjects showed evidence of past infection with the hepatitis B virus. The highest prevalence of HBsAg was found in males between the age of 20 and 29 years. In both males and females the prevalence of antigen and antibody declined with increasing age. The only subtype of HBsAg detected was ayw and a high proportion of carriers had detectable levels of circulating HBeAg.
