note = "Type of Work: Text contribution to article 'Artists' published in 'Frieze' This text contributed to a series of short essays by artists on more senior artists who have had a significant influence upon their practice. In this text I discuss Serious Undertakings, a film by Helen Grace in which she undertakes a rigorous feminist critique of the construction of the art-historical canon, as well as reflecting critically on Australian identity, childbirth and domestic work. I argue that Grace{\textquoteright}s film is wry, witty and intellectual, evoking a vast, contested grey area concerning women{\textquoteright}s experience, in Australia particularly. It lays out a complex range of views and leaves us space to think, to feel complicated and enmeshed. This, I would argue, is an important function of art. This text situates Grace within an internationally well-regarded context, being published in the Frieze Masters publication that is released to coincide with the fair of the same name in London, presenting works by significant artists from a range of periods.",
