Abstract

Hair analysis is well-established in forensic toxicology and offers many advantages that complement the analysis of traditional specimens. This article provides an overview of the various factors that impact drug uptake in hair, and the pre-analytical and analytical aspects of hair analysis. It will also discuss the applications of hair analysis in post-mortem toxicology, drug-facilitated crime, at-risk children, doping control, and assessment of the degree of chronic alcohol consumption, as well as limitations in hair analysis for a valid and defensible interpretation.
