Abstract
Haematemesis is the vomiting of blood. Melaena is the passage of black tarry stools. Both are important symptoms that must not be ignored as the causes may be life-threatening. This chapter outlines the common causes of haematemesis and melaena, provides information on the various clinical presentations and provides a treatment paradigm.
