Abstract
The formation of giant vortex structures in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates was investigated. Numerical simulation of giant vortex structures were performed within the Gross-Pitaevskii formalism. The effect of atom removal to that of a conservative repulsive pinning potential in the formation and stability of giant vortex structures were also compared. the simulation results show that the formation of the giant vortex lagged the duration of the laser pulse only when the repulsive pinning potential was used.
