The first AusIMM GeoMet Conference was held at the Hilton Brisbane from September 5-7 2011. This was the first dedicated conference to this rapidly developing field to be held in Australia or globally. The conference was an excellent technical forum to discuss some of the hot topics in the field and to help researchers to understand their orebodies in a more dynamic way. The conference attracted almost 300 participants, including 51 delegates from 14 overseas countries including Canada, Chile, South Africa and the US. Highlights included various case studies from Olympic Dam, linking rock texture to comminution properties, computer tomography of gold ores and modeling. The feedback from the conference was very favorable with delegates requesting that the conference series continues on a biannual basis. Geometallurgy should be an integrated part of the scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility phases of a project.
