N2 - The aim of this paper is to provide a baseline description of the establishment of the LGBTQI+ movement in Timor-Leste understood in the context of gender relations in the wider society and document its contesting of conservative values, advocacy for acceptance and respect for the human rights of LGBTQI+ peoples and successful alliance building with other progressive social forces in society. However, the movement is woefully under resourced and in need of much more national and international solidarity and support to carry out their crucial work.
