Abstract

Completion of the sequencing phase of the Human Genome Project and the availability of most genes as intact functional units in bacterial artificial chromosomes (PACs or BACs), provide a solid platform for development of drugs for the targeted modification of gene expression. Emerging techniques for precise engineering of human genes in bacterial artificial chromosomes are rapidly bringing this possibility closer to reality.
