Finite element analysis of bond behaviour between CFRP laminates and steel members under impact load

Abstract

This paper presents the numerical simulation of CFRP laminates bonded to steel members in double strap joints under different loading rates; four loading rates were used starting from quasi-static loading to 5 m/sec. Two types of CFRP, CFK 150/2000 and CFK 200/2000, were used to build the CFRP-steel double strap joint models. Both implicit and explicit finite element codes were used for static and dynamic modelling respectively, using the non-linear finite element software ABAQUS. The FE models were assessed by comparing the FE results with the results obtained from the experimental program. Ultimate bond strength and effective bond length were the two parameters included in this comparison. FE modelling shows good predictions with the different variables for both quasi-static and dynamic tests.
