note = "The articles in this major portfolio represent a coherent body of political reporting in the role of National Affairs Correspondent for New Matilda. The portfolio covers a year in Australian federal politics. 2016 was an election year and saw some fascinating developments in Australian politics. The Coalition government of Malcolm Turnbull was plagued by instability, before Turnbull called a double dissolution and scraped to a narrow re-election, punctuated by a dramatic election night speech by the Prime Minister. Post-election, the Coalition government struggled to implement its agenda, as forces within the Liberal Party began to split apart on social issues. The portfolio is a record of this tumultuous year, reported from locations around Australia by the author for New Matilda. The works document new knowledge in the form of primary source journalism and reporting, including the gathering of novel qualitative data in the form of interviews with politicians, policy-makers, public officials, subject matter experts and interest group representatives. The methodology is one of traditional political journalism, combining qualitative research in the form of first-person reportage and interviews with statistics, charts and other quantitative evidence, grounded in the social science evidence base and focused on public policy analysis. Read together, the works in the portfolio constitute a detailed overview of the political scene, and amount to a major contribution to the “first draft of history” of Australian national politics and public policy in the 2016 calendar year.
