note = "The articles in this minor portfolio represent a coherent body of reporting in my role as Arts correspondent for Crikey. 2016 was another turbulent year in the federal Arts portfolio and saw a number of important funding cuts flowing through to client organisations of the Australia Council. The works document new knowledge in the form of primary source journalism and reporting, including the gathering of novel qualitative data in the form of interviews with politicians, policy-makers, public officials, subject matter experts and interest group representatives. The methodology is one of traditional political journalism, combining qualitative research and reportage with statistics, charts and other quantitative evidence to form analysis of Australian public policy throughout. Articles are of typical length for the online environment (800-1,200 words) and are deeply sourced, with many hyperlinks referring to evidence. Read together, the works in the portfolio constitute a detailed overview of Australian cultural policy in 2016, particularly the ongoing controversy over the funding of the Australia Council, and amount to a minor contribution to the “first draft of history” in this field.
