Abstract
The main aim of this paper was to investigate fatigue cracking in a fillet welded specimen. Infrared thermography was used to measure the stress field of the welded specimen. The resultant infra-red readings were then used in conjunction with strain gauge measurement to validate a 3D finite element solution and thereby determine the stress field at the critical region. A semi-analytical solution technique was then used to determine the stress intensity factor solution and the Hartman-Schijve equation used to compute crack growth. The resultant computed and measured fatigue lives are consistent.
