Exploring the complexities of China’s ‘base entity’ on Chinese education studies: The interactions of Confucianism, Socialism and Modernism

    As a nation with deep rooted Confucius culture tradition, the dominant Socialist political system and ideology, and the continuous promotion of social modernisation, the studies of China’s education from the ‘Western eyes’ have been recently problematized and questioned (Zhang, Chan and Kenway, 2015). Drawing on the concept of ‘base entity’ (Chen, 2010), the aim of this paper is to explore the complexities of China’s ‘base entity’ in education studies. This article first explores the Confucianism as a system of social and ethical philosophy to establish norms of individual behaviours and social values (Berlin, 1996) from a long-period historical development. Then it further discusses the Socialism as the political ideologies and theories to establish the Socialist political and economic systems since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Furthermore, the modernism as a far-reaching Western philosophical movement on the transformations of China’s society since the late 19th century has been investigated. By bringing together the philosophies of Confucianism, Socialism and Modernism in the contexts of Chinese education studies, this paper contributes to provide a new route on this thriving area to understand the China’s ‘base entity’.
