Abstract

Older Americans frequently receive potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) despite recommendations to avoid them, leading to harms such as adverse drug reactions, falls, hospitalization, and death. The vast majority of US older adults (92%) reported being willing to stop taking one or more of their medicines if their physician said it was possible; two-thirds wanted to reduce the number of medicines they were taking. The present study examined whether individuals' intent to deprescribe predicts the likelihood of stopping one or more PIM in usual care.
