Exploring a phosphate system for corrosion prevention in CO2 pipelines

The internal corrosion of carbon dioxide (CO2) pipelines is an undesirable phenomenon in CO2 capture and storage. Internal corrosion protection systems in cases where the liquid stream is acidified by in-situ speciation of carbonic acid (and other impurities) are in high demand in the hydrocarbon and chemical process industries to reduce the high cost of maintenance. In this context, we explore the feasibility of Mn-Mg based zinc phosphate coatings as a treatment for the interior surface of steel pipelines in acidified environments. The concept behind phosphate protection is to build a solid phosphate layer with micron grain size (1-5 μm) and low porosity on the interior surface of pipelines. The phosphate microstructure may potentially host different inhibitors and may be sealed with long carbon chain species that increase the anti-corrosion performance of a phosphate layer. In this work, the addition of sodium orthovanadate (Na3VO4) in a modified phosphate bath led to a significant change in the microstructure of the phosphate coating. Electrochemical tests (polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) were performed in chlorinated de-ionised water at pH 2-4.
