Abstract
The ERA is a challenging process; having one’s work assessed is rarely comfortable, and the discomfort is clearly augmented when the criteria of assessment are as much an object of contention as the results. The continued, if necessary, change results in further uncertainty about future impacts of the process and outcomes. However, rather than add to the chorus of criticisms directed at the ERA, our interest here is to consider whether this moment might present an op-portunity to focus on consolidating journalism studies, and what lessons we might take from the ERA in that spirit
