Evolution traceability roadmap for business processes

Abstract

For traceable evolution of software systems, tracking of continuous changes in their constituent artifacts is essential. The paper outlines a roadmap for evolution traceability of software artifacts with a focus on evolution traceability of descriptions of business processes. Several traceability approaches are overviewed, and a categorization of evolution traceability is presented based on the type of evolving software artifacts that need to be traced through their evolution. Existing approaches for tracing evolution of business processes are discussed, and it is noted that there is a need for representational and analytical techniques in this area. Challenges in research on automation of evolution traceability of business processes enriching the present practices are also discussed.
