Abstract
Ethyl lactate is an easily biodegradable, nontoxic, and noncorrosive solvent obtained from renewable sources. It is an amphiphilic, high boiling-point liquid miscible with water and nonpolar solvents and suitable for applications in various fields. This chapter focuses mainly on the utility of ethyl lactate and its aqueous solutions as media for organic synthesis. This green solvent has effectively served in many chemical transformations, being particularly efficient in the synthesis of heterocycles and photochemical and multicomponent reactions.
