Abstract
This module provides an introduction to ethical issues in stem cell and related research. The module has been designed to enhance students’ understanding of ethical principles that underpin scientific and biomedical research with consideration to the Australian curriculum, specifically in response to Science as a Human Endeavour (SHE).
We outline activities linked to contemporary issues faced by Australian stem cell researchers, drawing upon examples featured on the Stem Cells Australia Stories from the Labs website page, and this module can be used as a companion document to the Stem Cells Australia At the Frontier of Tomorrow’s Medicine Teaching Resource. Topics range from the derivation and use of stem cells in laboratory and clinical settings, to situations involving cloning, ageing and gene editing technology and cover ethical issues associated with both human and animal research.
