Abstract
Conventional perspectives regarding the ethical issues around cochlear implantation are often simplistic and under-informed. A common assumption is that there is a choice between unequivocal acceptance of the benefit of the technology on the one hand, and a choice based on respect for the integrity and values of the Deaf community on the other. The parameters of perceived choice are explored and it is concluded that such a simplistic model fails to recognize the complex and heterogeneous array of variables that need to be considered by, and the options that are available for, the individuals concerned, their families, and the medical practitioners advising them.
