Abstract
In the 1997 report from the American Diabetes Association and the 1998 World Health Organization provisional report on classification and criteria for diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance and the newly described intermediate stage of impaired fasting glucose are classified as stages in progression to: or risk factors for, diabetes. Each of these stages is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and many people with these forms of abnormal glucose tolerance progress to type 2 diabetes.
