Abstract

This article explores the main areas and features of debate in environmental education (EE). It surveys contemporary and historic debates to illustrate how EE goals, activities, and approaches are variously conceptualized, contextualized, developed, and contested. It also traces the principles and conditions that
afford a purposeful and generative culture of debate, considering the case for and substance of educational reform as an exemplar to underscore the value of debate for developing and furthering the field. Key forums for EE debate include (1) the meetings, conferences, and networks of the field and cognate areas, for
example, as represented by North American Association for Environmental Education, World Environmental Education Congress, and American Educational Research Association; (2) associated and transdisciplinary
professional and scholarly groupings; and (3) the field's publications and wider related literatures, for
example, as listed at http://www.eelink.net
