Abstract
Second-level nurses, known as enrolled nurses in Australia, are an important part of the nursing profession, and over time the role and function has evolved in accordance with the changing needs of healthcare provision globally.
As part of their 5-year review process, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is reviewing the Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice and in due course, the Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards, and have commissioned this scoping review.
Aim: The aim of this scoping review was to identify and provide a synthesis of the available literature related to enrolled nurse regulation, standards for practice, scope of practice, accreditation and education, and pathways to registration from enrolled nurse to registered nurse.
The findings will inform the next steps in the review process of the EN Standards for Practice, and in due course, the review of EN Accreditation Standards.
The specific review questions were:
• What is the evidence related to EN regulation, including standards and scope of practice?
• What is the evidence related to EN education, including accreditation standards and the expected EN graduate attributes?
• What are the pathways to practice from an EN to an RN?
