Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the current situation of English-medium instruction (EMI) in higher education in Germany. It begins with an overview of German higher education institutions before discussing the emergence and current situation of EMI in Germany. The chapter delves into aspects related to EMI students and educators in Germany, such as their entry to EMI programmes and the challenges they face. Besides reviewing the literature on EMI in the German higher education, this chapter presents key findings from an empirical research project on EMI across German higher education institutions conducted by the authors in 2020−2021. Drawing on both the literature and empirical data, this chapter highlights how context matters for EMI design and implementation, as well as the importance of educators’ strong agency in interacting with the EMI context. Implications for EMI in higher education in Germany and outlook for future research will also be discussed.
