Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of employment regulation and industrial relations (IR) systems in Southeast Asia. We focus primarily on the major economies of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Southeast Asia is one of the most rapidly growing, dynamic, and diverse regions in the world. It is also one of the most economically integrated, with high and sustained levels of foreign investment. Growth and regional and global integration is only anticipated to accelerate in coming years, in light of intensified efforts by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member-states to establish a globally integrated and competitive single market and production base through the ASEAN Economic Community.
