Abstract

Fluoride materials can be purified using electrochemical reduction of Ni2+, Fe2+, Cu2+ and Co2+ from a ZrF4{single bond}BaF2{single bond}LaF3{single bond}AlF3{single bond}NaF molten mixture at 600°C. In principle, it is possible to reduce the transition element impurities to less than 0.1 ppm. It is also possible to achieve an in situ fluorination of the melt to correct any fluorine deficiency, possibly via the electrochemical production of small amounts of F2(g) at the anode. An apparatus for electrochemical purification of fluoride melts and preliminary results are discussed.
