Abstract

The opioid anaesthetic alfentanil does not affect the arterial baroreflex-mediated vasoconstrictive Phase I of simulated haemorrhage, but prevents the cardiac-receptor mediated failure of vasoconstriction that occurs in Phase II. This appears to be due to an action on μ-opiate receptors in the CNS.
