Effects of joint rotational stiffness on structural responses of multi-story modular buildings

Abstract

The overall structural performance of multi-story modular buildings is largely dominated by the joint mechanical properties of inter-And intra-module connections. This paper presents a numerical investigation on the effect of joint rotational stiffness on the structural responses of multi-storey steel modular buildings. A three-dimensional detailed finite element (FE) model is first developed for typical connections in modular buildings. Bolt pre-Tension and contact behaviour are considered in such detailed FE modelling for the involved bolted connections. The resulting joint rotational stiffness is verified against data available from the literature for implementation in subsequent structural analysis. Therefore, in the full structural models, connections are modelled using spring elements which enable the definition of connection semi-rigidity and non-linearity. Based on the structural model, parametric studies are performed to investigate the effcct of joint rotational stiffness of intra-module (e.g. beam-To-column connections) connections, joint rotational stiffness of inter-module connections (e.g. horizontal and vertical ties). The resulting overall structural performances are examined against ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS) requirements as per relevant standards and design guidelines.
