Effect of various heat-treatments on the oxidation behaviour of 2 one quarter cr-1mo steel

Abstract

2 one quarter Cr-1Mo ferritic steel is generally used in normalised and tempered condition in various moderate temperature applications. Since there is a drastic change in the microstructure of the alloy on heat-treatment, it is expected that the oxidation behavior would change depending upon the type of heat-treatment given. Oxidation kinetics have been determined for 2 one quarter Cr-1Mo steel in various heat treated conditions viz. normalised, quenched, annealed & tempered conditions. A change in oxidation kinetics has been observed which has been confirmed by the change in surface morphology of scales observed under SEM and is correlated with the change in alloy microstructure.
