Abstract

Due to amphiphilic properties, glycyrrhizic acid is capable of forming water-soluble conjugates with a wide variety of hydrophobic pharmaceutical compounds. This results in a significant reduction in the therapeutic dose of the drugs. To enlighten the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the observed effects, the influence of glycyrrhizic acid on the properties of cell membranes was studied by physical methods. Glycyrrhizic acid was found to increase the elasticity of human erythrocyte membranes and slow down the process of hemolysis.
