Abstract

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions marked by abnormal eating behaviors that impair physical health and psychosocial functioning. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified or unspecified feeding or eating disorders. Each has distinct diagnostic criteria, often involving distorted body image, fear of weight gain, or persistent food avoidance. Assessment includes psychological evaluation, physical examination, and relevant investigations. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach combining nutritional support, psychotherapy (e.g., CBT), and pharmacotherapy where appropriate. Early detection and tailored intervention are key to improving outcomes and preventing long-term complications.
