Abstract

This chapter is about early intervention in mental health. As a practitioner, the author will draw heavily from experience as an early psychosis clinician in a clinical mental health service, accordingly this particular context will be the focus. However, much of this chapter will be relevant to social work in clinical mental health settings more broadly. Additionally, while other service sectors such as Headspace and mental health community support services (MCHSS) are not the focus, it is important to acknowledge the excellent and important early intervention work that they do. This chapter will outline the frameworks for practice in early psychosis, describe some of the interventions that social workers may undertake in this context, consider some of the research occurring in this arena and finally provide some resources for further study.
