Abstract

Return to driving is a common rehabilitation goal following traumatic brain injury (TBI) as it enables and facilitates independence, community integration, employment, and life satisfaction. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of driver assessment and rehabilitation following TBI. It defines the key terms relating to driving performance, assessment, and rehabilitation. The chapter outlines the domains of driving performance commonly affected by TBI and analyses the factors commonly associated with crash risk and reduced driving performance. It proposes a step-by-step, multidisciplinary approach to driver assessment and rehabilitation. The chapter reviews the efficacy of various driver rehabilitation techniques in addition to recommendations on how to support individuals and their families who do not successfully return to driving. It focuses on motor vehicle driving for private use as opposed to motorcycle riding or driving commercial or heavy vehicles.
