Digital empowerment: a new conceptual model

Abstract

In this chapter, we critically consider the concept of digital empowerment within the context of rapid technological advancements in the last two decades. With the increasing ubiquity of digital technologies such as social media, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, there is a pressing need for people to develop a robust set of digital literacies that can empower them. These literacies enable them to be adaptable to change, resilient, and confident in navigating and understanding digital environments, as well as being creative and productive. We argue that digital empowerment is especially crucial for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, who often face challenges in adapting to and settling in new countries. We propose a model of digital empowerment that includes five interconnected domains: digital literacies, digital resilience, personal impressions of success, inspiration and hope, and digital proactivism. This model provides a comprehensive framework for educators and policymakers to design learning programmes that not only enhance technical competencies but also empower individuals to leverage digital technologies for personal and community development. This chapter also highlights the need for further research to explore the application of digital empowerment in diverse educational and social contexts, especially involving migrants and refugees.
