Abstract
In 2005, The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne was funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services to provide a lung transplant programme for children in Victoria. This programme operates within the large adult heart and lung transplant service that was established at The Alfred in 1989. The Alfred has accepted referrals for paediatric patients from around Australia and New Zealand and since 2005 has carried out seven paediatric lung transplants on children from Victoria and Queensland. This paper outlines the service delivery model of care for paediatric lung transplant patients at The Alfred and reviews the international experience of lung transplantation in children.
