Determination of micelle structure of octyl-β-glucoside in aqueous solution by small angel neutron scattering and geometric analysis

Abstract

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were performed to investigate the structure of micelle of n-octyl-β-glucoside. Ellipsoidal and cylindrical models were applied to fit SANS data. It was found that the models can describe the scattering data fairly well. Aggregation number and molecular structure of n-octyl-β-glucoside as well as SANS data were taken into account to analyze micelle structure. The hydrodynamic radius predicted by the cylindrical model was consistent with that obtained from diffusivity by other authors. This suggests that the obtained shape of micelle is reasonable.
