Designing gender-sensitive spaces for consenting cities: An overview

This is the introduction to the edited collection Designing gender-sensitive spaces for consenting cities: practices and provocations. Bringing together activists, design practitioners, and scholars in conversation with the fields of geography, architecture, urban planning, gender studies, literature studies, and feminist and queer theory, this book aims to investigate gender-sensitive spaces, design practices, and provocations that challenge the complex social and material structures that shape inequities of access and inclusion in cities. The book includes a mix of emerging and established voices to build a varied discourse that is concerned with applied approaches, along with theoretical structures, and advocacy. Through an investigation of design-led methods, project case studies, activist interventions, and processes of resistance and agency, this volume offers new thinking around how design might shift towards safer and more inclusive cities for women, gender-diverse people, and LGBTIQA+ communities.
